Galloway House Gardens

These historic seaside gardens set in over 50 acres on the shore of Wigtown Bay on the Solway Firth were created in 1740 by Lord Garlies, son of the 5th Earl of Galloway.

Galloway House Gardens is a charity-run garden with no staff and offers a fascinating network of formal garden paths and informal natural woodland walks amidst superb scenery where a variety of interesting plants from wild flowers and shrubs to magnificent old trees thrive due to the region’s mild climate. In early spring the gardens are bright with snowdrops and daffodils, followed by a display of rhododendrons and azaleas.

The gardens and woodlands lead directly to the seashore and a beautiful sandy beach beyond which you can follow the coastal path to the spectacular heights of Cruggleton Cliffs and the ruins of Cruggleton Castle.

Information: The arboretum and woodlands are open from March 1st to 31st October from 9.00 am to 5.00 pm. There is a charge for parking. It costs £2.25 for one hour (short stay) and £5.25 if you are staying longer. Their machine accepts payment in cash, by card and by mobile phone. The nearest toilet facilities are in Garlieston village next to the village hall. More details can be found at gallowayhousegardens.co.uk
